A Work Experience Poem

Yunus, a Year 10 student from Cumberland School in Newham, joined Team Switch for work experience last week through Inspire EBP’s Work Experience programme. Yunus has an interest in finance and business and was looking forward to seeing how charity operations work.

Before Yunus finished his placement with us, he shared a poem about his experience and the importance of work experience with us.

Imagine this, you’re fresh out of college, and more than ready to enter the world of work. You get ready half an hour before work just to be safe. You let out a big smile just before you open the door to your workplace. Yet when you open the door, what waits ahead was nothing you expected. It was nothing like school, there were no practice rounds or instructions. You had to do it all yourself or get fired on the first day. This was the real thing. The whole day practically had your brain melted. The thought of work had turned from an opportunity to grow, into complete dread and confusion. You wondered what step of the process you missed, what went wrong with your preparation for the real world?

This is where work experience comes in, it’s your preparation for the real world. You can learn skills which seemed beyond your capabilities when you were at school. And now because of this experience I feel confident that I can effectively complete tasks that are outside the border of pen and paper.

Yunus, Year 10, Cumberland School
